without pain.

"Without pain, how could we know joy? This is an old argument in the field of thinking about suffering and its stupidity and lack of sophistication could be plumbed for centuries but suffice it to say that the existence of broccoli does not, in any way, affect the taste of chocolate."

  1. Hmmm...thought-provoking. I think that, had Eve not eaten the apple, we would not need pain to remind us how precious joy truly is. However, as it is, without pain we would begin to depend upon ourselves, and believe that we don't need God, and we would "get used to" joy.
    Just a thought. :)

Of course, but at the same time, when you eat broccoli a lot, chocolate will be much tastier when you get a bite of it, in the same way, if you're going through a really really hard time and something really great happens, or you get through it and you're on the other side, you will truly understand what it is to not be joyful, and grow to appreciate it more.
