Pros and Cons to Taking Online Classes | College Tips with Kenzie

Some of you already know that I am currently on a break from school. I decided to get a job whilst being in the process of transferring. But before that, I was taking online classes at a community college. I've taken quite a few online courses, and since my younger siblings are currently taking college courses online as well, I will admit... I have some insight I'd like to share with you.

Pros and Cons to Taking Online Colleges Classes

There's always a pro and con to something, regardless of what it is. Online schooling is definitely convenient and it really helps, depending on your living situation. For me, taking online courses was convenient because I don't have my own car, making it hard to commute to classes. Plus, most of the classes I wanted to take was only offered at the main campus (which is kind of far commuting wise). Another reason is I'M INTROVERTED. I prefer to stay in the comforts of my home instead of worrying about everyone's gaze lingering on me when I raise my hand to ask a question*.

* I'm THAT type of student who asks the professor a lot of questions. Mainly regarding assignments.

But I'll admit, there have been moments when I felt insane from sitting down and staring at my laptop screen for too long. So, let's start with the bad and end with the good, shall we?

CONS

- There is more work!

You're not in a classroom. The professor won't know you're doing your work unless you're actually working on assignments. That is why there are a lot more assignments in the online classroom. I would never recommend taking a full course load online because that already sounds insane. And if you have, congratulations! You can conquer anything.

- There is A LOT of writing

With more assignments there comes more writing! Personally, I enjoy writing. I love written assignments (especially over exams!) but some people can find this very tiring. And since you aren't in a classroom, verbally communicating with your fellow classmates, you will have to participate in discussion boards. Those can be fun at times and other times they can be draining. It all depends on the course!

I took a course one semester and my professor was so strict about the word count! We had a lot of discussion boards and whenever it came to replying to another student's discussion, our responses had to be a certain word count. Whereas, in most of my other courses, the word count didn't matter as much as providing insight.

- You feel like a zombie (and you may never see the light of day!)

With all that extra workload and practically being on your computer 25/8, you end up feeling a bit... MEH. There were times when I'd wake up and get right to my school work before getting dressed or brushing my teeth!

There have also been times when I hadn't left the house in DAYS. (It could have been weeks but sometimes I was forced to leave because I had to run to the store.)

And once I'm finished with my school work, obviously I don't want to touch my laptop until the next day. This sucks because I love blogging and writing for my creative outlet... And if I'm already on my laptop doing schoolwork all day, I don't feel like being on it any more than I have to.

- The professors...

The majority of my online professors have been great! Some tried to connect with the students more than others. It's really good if you do get a professor who tries to connect with you (i.e. posting videos of their lectures and participating in discussion boards) because it makes everything a lot easier. Whereas, in an actual classroom, it might be easier to get a letter of recommendation from a professor because they were able to have more of a connection with you.

Also, you never know who you are getting for a professor. The worst course I had ever taken was online and it was all because of the professor. They were never online and they never responded to my emails until days later. They never used the (expensive) textbook and when it came to grading small assignments, they gave us good grades. But when it came to the real and final assignments, it was always bad! It was the very first college class that made me cry.

The only good thing that came out of that course was that I had made friends by bonding over how awful our professor was!

- You are the teacher

When it comes down to it, you're basically teaching yourself. That can be hard if you are finding a certain subject really tricky. If you're having a hard time, don't be afraid to ask for help.

PROS

- You get to make your own schedule!

Since I am so bad at time management, I find this tricky because it was easy for me to fall into a bad schedule. However, I feel like many of you could find this really helpful- especially if you have other things going on in your life.

Eventually, I was able to get into a pretty good schedule for certain semesters. There was this one semester when I would only do my coursework in the morning, take a break, then finish sometime in the afternoon.

Taking breaks is so important when you're your own boss. I found myself mentally better when I made time for breaks.

- You can do your work WHEREVER

As long as there is wifi!

Isn't that great, though? You don't have to stay at home to be in class! You can be in class at Starbucks, the library, even on vacation! Wherever you want to go, you can take your school work with you.

I found myself being more productive at the library over home, where I was constantly interrupted. Also, at home, you can lose track of time and before you know it, you've been working on this small assignment for five hours. Whereas, if you go to the library and you can only stay for three hours... Now you have a time limit and you're able to get it done faster.

- You can write and blog more!

If you like multitasking, this is a huge plus for you. I found myself able to blog more while doing online schooling. I'd usually set a timer for 30 minutes and do my school work then take a 10-minute break by writing a scene or working on a blog post. I did NaNoWriMo during a couple semesters and this method really helped me get my word count up.

Another thing that is great about taking online courses is that if someone sees you typing away like a maniac on your laptop, they are totally going to assume you are deep into an essay and not writing that climactic scene in your NaNo novel and leave you alone! Isn't that great? A lot of people think that doing other things aside from school work on your laptop is a waste of time (I beg to differ). So, if they know you're currently enrolled online, they won't bother you...

person: hey, I need your help--

me: I'm in the middle of a quiz right now, maybe later?

person: okay

me: *proceeds to next buzzfeed quiz to find out what tv show character is my soulmate*

It's all about knowing how to work the system. ;)

- It's okay to go to class in your pjs (you're safe, introverts!)

I know I said that there were some days when I wouldn't even get changed out of my pajamas and that made me feel meh? Well, sometimes that isn't such a bad thing.

You don't have to doll yourself up anymore. And you don't have to mentally prepare yourself to socialize with strangers or do those awful icebreakers! You can do it all online, behind the screen of your computer where no one will see you. I don't know about you but that eases my anxiety.

What do you think?

Like I said, it definitely has its pros and cons. Before I took my first online class, I was told that online courses were HARD. But I actually found out that it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. It's no different than being homeschooled. It's all about time management and motivating yourself. If you can do that, you got this!

Quick tips

If you're still scared about reverting to the cyber classroom then I highly suggest that you:

- Read the syllabus and know what your professor expects
- Log on every day, even when assignments are not due (it will save you in the long run)
- Don't be afraid to ask questions! (I have a feeling I'm the first student to email the professor every semester)

TALK TO ME!

Maybe you're thinking about taking online classes or are an online student who can #RELATE, I hope you found this post helpful or informative! LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU IF YOU CAN ADD ANYTHING TO THIS! Have you ever had a bad professor (in class or online)? Have you ever had a great professor and were sad to let them go? HAVE YOU EVER FORGOTTEN WHICH YEAR IT WAS OR TAKEN A BUZZFEED QUIZ TO FIND OUT WHICH STARBUCKS DRINK YOU ARE? Because same.

Do you ever feel like the world is ending? | How To Change Your Mindset

12:00 PM
By Kenzie

Do you ever feel like the world is ending?

I know that sounds crazy morbid and mediocre but just listen to me for a second... Do you ever feel like you are running out of time? Because I feel like that all the time.

I guess you can say that I am in this constant battle with time- not against time but with it. I always feel like I'm waiting for something to happen OR I feel like everything is coming to an end (again, I'm not trying to sound morbid)...

And maybe I feel this way because summer is gradually slipping out from underneath my feet.

I've always had the hardest time with the transition from summer to fall. It gives me the worst feeling ever. Yes, it could be related to SAD (seasonal affective disorder) but I'm usually fine once fall is here. It's just that stupid transition that gets me every single year.

But maybe I also feel this way because I find time-management extremely difficult.

There are so many things I want to do but I constantly feel like I don't have enough time to do them.

And when I am working on something, I always feel as if I am not managing my time properly. What if I'm wasting my time? What if I could be doing something far more important right now? Then I don't end up getting anything accomplished because I was too busy running around like a chicken with its head cut off.

So, I was talking to the lovely Abbie the other day and she was something along the lines of lol help i dont have enough time to do all the things and I responded with something like lol same dude wut do we do. Then I realized something! So, I told her that the only way we can change the way of feeling like that is to change our mindsets.

BAM.

Best scientific discovery, am I right?? Now, you might be wondering "Kenzie, how the heck am I going to change the way I think??? u r crazy gurl." Well, have no fear because I have a solution*!

*Okay, it's not like a real solution because I'm not a doctor so everything I say is in confidentiality and based on personal opinion. JUST A LIL' DISCLAIMER FOR YAH.

HOW TO CHANGE YOUR MINDSET

Persistence

Change doesn't happen overnight. You know it. I know it. Your dog knows it. If you want something to stick, like a routine, you have to have persistence. It's not going to be easy, but it is so worth it.

Our minds are very manipulative. So, if you keep telling yourself today I am going to have a good day you might actually have one.

So, let's make a promise to start telling ourselves hey, you ARE capable. Whenever you feel a negative thought creeps into your mind replace it with something positive.

Instead of telling myself that I don't have enough time, I am going to replace that thought with you have all the time in the world.

Because I do. You do, too. In the end, it won't matter how you got there, as long as you get to that point.

Tell Yourself Enough Is Enough

What you are doing right now is ENOUGH so stop putting pressure on your poor mind to keep doing more because you feel like you have to squeeze everything into this short amount of time. Tell yourself that you are able to do anything you set your mind to because you are.

Surround Yourself With Positivity

It is so easy to get caught up in things that are toxic for you. If there is something you know that doesn't influence you in a positive and uplifting way, then I think its time to part ways with that thing.

For me, that would be Snapchat. I still have the app but I've cut my time spent on it wayyy down. The only reason why I still used it was because it was a way for me to keep in contact with friends. And, yeah, I actually have conversations on it instead of sending a blank screen that says "streaks". Other than that, I don't see how the app would help me grow as a person.

I no longer wish to feel bad about myself for losing all my streaks because what's the point? It won't matter in a two years from now so it should not matter now.

So, it's crazy important to take care of yourself and do things you know are good for your soul.

You Can Control Your Brain

Like I said above, you can change the way you think! A few years ago, I watched these TED talk videos by Marisa Peer and one of the things she talked about that stuck with me was how we are capable of changing the way we think. I highly recommend watching them, they really make you feel like you are able to do anything and everything.

TALK TO ME!

Do you ever doubt yourself? ARE YOU AFRAID TIME IS SLIPPING AWAY? What is the first step you are going to take to change YOUR mindset? HOW CAN WE SPREAD POSITIVITY INSTEAD OF SELF-DOUBT?? Thank you so much for reading this post. I'm going through a rough patch these last few weeks of summer and it's killing me because all I want to do is breathe in the beautiful air and enjoy the moment. But! I am going to listen to my own advice and try to do that. ;)

What Am I Even Doing? (Monthly Wrap-Up + Camp NaNo)

5:59 PM
By Kenzie

March was... *awkward chuckle* Not the best (productivity-wise). Or, at least, it felt that way. The last couple weeks have been confusing, if I may be honest. I have been questioning pretty much everything. Which has consisted of me asking myself this question, over and over again:

What am I even doing?

It's a confusing time in my life at the moment. I have so much I need to figure out, so much I don't even know how to figure out... And it all feels overwhelming. All my goals kind of just plummeted and at some point, it all just seemed... pointless.

Which stinks because I want this to be a positive community.

But I'm not perfect and not every day is going to be productive. So, I think I just have a lot more figuring out to do... *cliche eye roll* I guess I put pressure on myself. I look at all these amazing things that everyone is accomplishing and it makes me feel like: oh, I should be doing this and this NOW.

I don't mean to sound like I am complaining. Of course, that is not my intention. The reason why I express these feelings to you is because I like to be honest with you. And I like being able to reach out just in case someone else feels the same way.

I was talking to my beautiful friend, Anna, and she gave me some advice that I would like to share with you.

You are still young (no matter how old you are). Everything will fall into place. It might not work out the way you want it to but it might just work out better.

So, sometimes life doesn't go as planned and you might fail, but whatever does happen... there will be some sort of positivity that comes out of it. You just have to look for it.

And that's what I am going to do right now. Without further ado... Let's do this.

March Wrap-Up

WHAT I POSTED

Do you ever forget you exist?

Writing Problems | "Dark Forest" sneak peek

It's Okay To Not Always Love What You Love

Why Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda (aka Love, Simon) is Worth The Hype | Movie Reaction??

WHAT I READ

This month was actually pretty good for reading, if I may say so myself. ;) I did end up re-reading two books but it was so worth it.

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

If you asked me what my favorite book is, I'd probably lie and say something like "I don't have a favorite" when, in reality, I'm mentally chanting "Carry On!".

*giggles like a kid on Christmas* Hehe, yeah... I read it again and loved it even more. Who knew that was even possible?? I am shamefully not ashamed.

Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

You all probably already know from my previous blog post that I read Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda again before going to see the movie and I loved it all the same! It was interesting to read it knowing who Blue is because then I could point out all the times Simon was so clueless. It's great.

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz

My lovely friend, Sarah, sent me this book and I am SO THANKFUL THAT SHE DID because I wasn't planning on reading this anytime soon. And allow me to say that it was so good.

You can read my goodreads review on it if you want to know a more in-depth reaction but I will say that this book made my heart ache in the most beautiful way. It was a deeper read, but in a good way. I loved it so much. I highly recommend it.

*is eagerly waiting for the sequel to come out*

Runaways issue #6 and #7

This is the first comic series that I am reading and so far I am enjoying it very much. (And so not because Rainbow Rowell is writing it. Pft. I don't have favorites. She said, her voice high and eyes, darting like crazy.)

WHAT I WATCHED

Love, Simon

Cannot. Talk. About. This. Movie. Enough. It was perfection. The cast and everything. Even the experience going to see it was breathtaking. I ~~want~~ need to go see it again and again and again.

I think I'm going for round 2 this week. I'm probably going to cry. Again. BUT I DON'T CARE BECAUSE:

1. Nick Robinson is the most awkward, adorable, beautiful human to exist. I'm not even going to deny that I love him.

And he is Simon.

2. I am also not going to deny that Keiynan Lonsdale is an absolute CUTIE.

That smile. I die.

47 Meters Down

Literally about two girls doing it for the 'gram. Did they not notice that the boat was super rusty??

When Calls The Heart

I've watched all the seasons so now I am caught up and I think I ship Bill and Abigail.

WHAT I LISTENED TO

Well, I'm so happy you asked because throughout the past month I listened to:

Simon's Playlist (curated by Becky Albertalli, Nick Robinson. and Katherine Langford)

Love, Simon Soundtrack

Simon's Oreos (my playlist for Simon)

...Simon has really good music taste, okay?? Yeah, I'll shut up now. (Links are included, by the way.)

WHAT I WROTE

I wrote a blog post over at Coffee and Wisdom about Agatha Christie and her play, The Mousetrap. I'll be posting over there quite frequently so you should definitely check it out. ;)

I also worked on my short story some more but I recently hit a writing rut and I am currently pounding my head against a wall. (Not really but very close to.)

I am hoping that Camp NaNo will inspire me to get over this bump in the road. Which reminds me...

I am doing Camp NaNo!

I decided to do it at the very last second. I have never participated before but I am eager to see what it is like. I am not even prepared but who cares. (I do but it's whatever.) I even got assigned a cabin?? It feels like I'm actually at camp! Which is cool because... I've never been to camp.

Anyways. I'm not really putting a lot of pressure on myself to do it but I am using this as a chance to finally finish my short story and maybe GET OUT OF THIS UGLY WRITING RUT.

Are you doing Camp NaNo? If so, what is your goal? I want to hear all about your project!

WHAT'S IN THE UP & UP

I should really be more prepared and take notes before I do these posts because now I am forgetting absolutely everything that happened in March. *grabs phone and looks through photos to see if it triggers any trace of memory*

Oh! Okay... I do have a few things to share. ;)

Spring cleaning!

I've been cleaning like a mad woman. I gutted my room and rearranged it. Including my mountain of books.

I also got rid of my desk because 1. my chair broke, and 2. it was too small anyway. So, I'm deskless but I might be getting bookshelves, which has been my dream since I fell in love with books.

I had oreo waffles!

And allow me to say that they were heavenly.

I won another goodreads giveaway!

I actually won it in December but the book didn't arrvive until... four months later. It's okay though because FREE BOOKS ARE AMAZING.

It's called Meet Cute and it is an anthology of cute stories by a bunch of authors, including Nina LaCour and Nicola Yoon! I'm thinking of maybe doing a review on it? LET ME KNOW IF I SHOULD.

It was Easter and I wore a yellow dress that my sister got for me.

Despite it having been 30 degrees.

I GOT AN ARC FOR WORLDS BENEATH!

The amazing Kate asked me if I would be interested in reading her second book to The Blood Race series and OF COURSE I SAID YES. I read an arc of The Blood Race last year and devoured it, so I am totally pumped to read this. I'm almost a hundred pages into it and YOU GUYS. You guys. You guys. It's been so worth the wait. I can't wait to review this book.

I've been working on my college applications.

I recently received some good news from a college of my choice. However, much of what I said above, actually, is related to the topic of "college". (It's a scary topic, in my opinion.)

I basically have the fate of my whole life in the palm of my hands and dude, I think that's freaking terrifying.

TALK TO ME!

Wow. This was a crazy, jumbled up post. I WOULD LIKE TO APOLOGIZE IF YOU READ THAT AND ALSO THANK YOU FOR MAKING IT THUS FAR. You're the best. SO HOW WAS YOUR MARCH?? Are you excited for April? DO YOU HAVE SPRING FEVER BECAUSE I DO! I desperately want to be at a beach right now. Like, I am aching to go. So, if anyone is going, please kidnap me and take me with you THANKS.

It's Okay To Not Always Love What You Love

Lately, I feel like I am in limbo. Sometimes, it's like I am going through the motions. I never knew what that really meant. Like, how could you go through the motions? I guess, now I know.

I feel like life is at full speed and it doesn't plan on stopping anytime soon. Everything just keeps happening all at once and I'm having a hard time appreciating it all.

If you didn't already know, I love the slow life. I like not having plans and waking up, knowing exactly what I want to get done and having enough time to re-read my favorite book (I love being able to say that since I've actually re-read so many of my fave books!). I love getting excited over the small things like scrolling through my friends' blogs or writing in the morning. But lately (and often) it feels like I am forcing myself to do the things I love doing. Sometimes I feel like in order for something to be good I have to be excited about it.

And guess what? Sometimes I'm just not that excited.

Which stinks! Because I do have the privilege to do things that I love doing-- if only I could *cough* manage *cough* my time *cough* better.

But not being excited about something that does make you excited is the worst feeling ever. Trust me, though, it does not last forever. You will find out why in just a second.

I like planning but there comes a time when I linger away from my bullet journal.

Having a schedule for things is the best. It's a way to get things done that you want to get done. I've been trying to have a blogging schedule (post every Monday!) but things come up and sometimes I'm just not in the mood... then I start putting pressure on myself and whoop! there goes my mental health.

But you know what? IT'S OKAY.

I think when you start feeling this way, that's when you know it's time for a break. I'm not saying I'm going anywhere, all I'm saying is that it's totally okay to set things aside for your own wellbeing, even if it is something you love doing.

Do something you used to love instead.

Picking up an old hobby is rejuvenating in a way. For me, that's opening up my sketchbook and drawing for fun. I don't do it as often as I'd like to but once I get started on a sketch... there's no stopping me until I finish.

Take a social media/blogging break.

Coming back from a break is the most refreshing feeling ever. The idea of going on a short hiatus sounds a bit heavenly to me at the moment. I've been thinking about it a lot lately (for a while, actually) and I might just have to do it.

READ.

My best mental state is when I am reading. If I'm not reading then everything kinda goes haywire. I'm sure most of you can relate to that, considering that this is a community directed towards readers (anyone is welcome, though! Readers, non-readers, pizza lovers, pizza haters, post-apocalyptic-aliens-that-have-come-back-to-avenge-their-queen's-death. Everyone! ).

Don't worry, you will love it again soon.

It's like eating cookie dough. Sure, you love eating it but sometimes you have a little too much and it feels like you'll never love cookie dough ever again. But what do you know? You're licking the spoon three days later. All you needed was a break to cleanse your tummy.

Sometimes you just need to take a break, even for the things you love.

TALK TO ME!

Do you ever feel this way? AM I GETTING TOO DEEP ON Y'ALL LATELY? I guess the other side of my INFJ has been more apparent. TELL ME... Do you ever wish you could take time and just slap that big ol' pause button because SAME.

Kicking January Blues | collab with Ella Marie

So, Christmas is over and everything just feels meh. Am I right? You might still have your tree up or you might have a couple half empty rolls of wrapping paper left in the basement. You might even have a couple holiday-themed cards placed on the bookshelf because you just refuse to believe that "the most wonderful time of the year" is over.

And you're utterly bored out of your mind.

But have no fear because Kenzie is here!

When I was younger, I used to absolutely hate it when the holidays were over. But then, I also didn't mind January that much... for two reasons:

1. January means it's almost my birthday! ~(o-o)~

2. It also means it's almost Valentine's Day!

Valentine's Day is one of my favorite times of the year because it just gives me a really good feeling, you know? It's like a wintery, cozy feeling with lots of chocolate and hearts and STOP LOOKING AT ME LIKE THAT. I know Valentine's Day is for, like, people in relationships and whatever, but that's not how I see it. To me it means telling those you care about you love them and buying a new book boyfriend. (In case you're wondering about the latter, my sister and I have a tradition of going to the bookstore to buy a new book (aka book boyfriend) every year. It's the best.)

Anywho, you didn't come here to watch me fangirl over some holiday most people despise.

HOW TO DEFEAT THOSE JANUARY BLUES LIKE A BOSS

So, you maybe can't find this month very appealing for any reason and it's understandable. Now, these are merely suggestions. Some people may enjoy something that someone else doesn't and that is totally okay. All I'm hoping for is to give you a little hand and a small awkward pat on the back.

1. Watch Anastasia (aka NOT Christmas movies- they'll only make you sadder)

This movie was MY CHILDHOOD, YO. Like, you have no idea how hard I shipped Dimitri and Anastasia. #noshamehere

I recently watched it for the first time in forever and it was still THE BEST. It takes place in the winter/spring time so it's perfect during January because of its setting. Therefore, I highly recommend if you're looking for a movie that isn't holiday themed but still gives you those winter vibes.

2. Color!

It seems like I always tend to get my creative juices flowing around this time of year and I feel the desire to draw something that isn't a card for someone. It's most likely because school hasn't started yet and I've got some free time. So, I'll grab out my sketchbook and make some art.

And you can too! Coloring books are great to get you in the creative/artsy-fartsy mood plus they are stress relievers. Now, there are so many coloring books available for people of all ages, it's great.

3. Finally do that thing you've been wanting to do

I know it can be hard to find the time to do that thing. You know, that thing. We've all got one. So, why not do it now? But- No buts! Go, do the thing! You'll feel so much more accomplished after you've done it. You know, that thing.

4. Go out for coffee with a friend!

I'm a homebody. I don't do that thing called socializing. But, you know what? It's kinda nice to set a little date in your little planner and meet someone for a little cup of coffee or a little something. You don't even have to go with someone, you can go alone! It might seem pointless at first but once you're out, you might find yourself smiling at the awkward couple on their first date sitting at the table across from you. (I speak from experience; it was really cute.)

5. Treat yo' self

Now is the perfect time to use up those gift cards you got during the holidays. So, make a day of it! The gift receiving/giving doesn't have to end in December. Go out, buy yourself something pretty or buy your mom something! Either way, you'll be treating yourself to a new dress or a warm hug from a loved one. It'll feel good, I promise.

6. Two words: Snail Mail

I'm honestly THE WORST at sending snail mail but I still love it all the same?? Anywho. I think now is the perfect time to send someone some snail mail. There are so many ideas on what you can put inside your letter/envelope on Pinterest without having to spend money. Also; I absolutely love watching Jordan Clark's videos. They put me in such a calming, I-wanna-send-snail-mail kind of mood. Plus, she has so many cute ideas I LOVE IT. You can also check out her beautiful blog here.

7. Prep for Valentine's Day!

It's a holiday for a reason so please... embrace it, my love. It helps you get over the excitement December had to offer while looking forward to something else.

Now go get 'em tiger! Don't let those Blues control your happiness! -(o-o)/

This post was also a collab with the amazingly sweet blogger, Ella Marie! Thank you, Ella, for asking and allowing me to collaborate with you on this! You guys should check out her January Blues post as well as her blog because she's an awesome blogger and I REALLY LOVE HER POSTS. <3

But that's not all!

We know how hard it is for us to transition from Christmas music 25/8 to none at all, so we made an upbeat playlist to help you get over that habit! Enjoy, my lovely friends. <3

TALK TO ME!

What is something you hate about January? WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU LOVE? What do you do when there is simply nothing else to do? LET ME KNOW! Share some of your own tips and ideas with me.

Cheers! To Another Year (Monthly Wrap-Up)

Another year has gone and passed, and thank. goodness. Don't get me wrong, I get all choked up at the end of every year because I am #sentimental and #sensitive. But this year was not the fondest, and I can't wait for it to be over.

Nonetheless, even the worst years have their perks. Usually, at the end of the month, I reflect upon what those past few weeks have brought me, but in this post, I am going to highlight the best moments of this past year. Let's get to it, shall we?

(While writing this post, I am currently listening to the Blogger Yearbook's playlist and it eez lit, my friend.)

2017 HIGHLIGHTS

January - March

- I got bangs! They grew out but I'm still debating on whether or not I want to get them again.

- I cried to the Everything, Everything trailer. (There is picture proof.)

- I was offered into an honors society. After accepting, there was a very awkward award ceremony where I had to awkwardly walk on stage in big awkward heels and awkwardly shake strangers' hands. It was awkward.

April - June

- I saw Everything, Everything in theaters and flailed.

- I volunteered for the third time at our Teen Book Festival, where I was able to spend the day with the lovely Nina LaCour (she gives the best hugs) and meet THE Sarah J. Maas. Her husband(?) complimented me on my washi tape. #whyislifesogood

July - September

- I made the big change of saying goodbye to think. eat. write. read. and hello to Paper Pizza!

- I was a beta reader for my lovely friend, Anna. Who published her second installment to the Continuing Forever Trilogy in July! Whoo!

- I was also given the amazing opportunity to take part in the blog tour for Kate's book, The Blood Race. And let me just say- the book is flipping awesome.

- I won a book giveaway on Annaish then had the amazing privilege of reading and interviewing the author of The Summer That Melted Everything.

- My online college classes started in September and I took my first ever English course! And... well... it was aggravating. Some professors just... ugh. You feel?

October - December

- I finally opened my Etsy shop and was able to sell almost all my inventory (which wasn't much but still)! But be on the look for some goodies that will be added shortly. ;)

- I helped introduce Ravenquill Press to the world and we started our very first book club!

- I WROTE THE FIRST DRAFT OF MY FIRST BOOK AND WON NANOWRIMO!

- I received some amazing gifts from my beautiful internet friends and WOWOW HOW BLESSED I AM TO HAVE SUCH BEAUTIFUL SOULS IN MY LIFE. <3

- I completed my Goodreads challenge! It was a struggle towards the end but I was able to meet my goal for the first time, which I am very happy about (even though it wasn't much).

- CHRISTMAS PREPARATION WAS AMAZING! I was able to bake bake bake until I couldn't feel my legs. There was so much snow around me and I couldn't have been happier. I also got DOC MARTENS FOR CHRISTMAS (wut). *cries for days* I got a few other things, including BOOKS. Which I will talk about in another post. ;)

All in all...

It was a pretty good year, especially in certain parts. I feel like I grew closer to my siblings and was able to bond with them a lot. I was much more motivated and productive, and I tried to accomplish the goals I had set for myself. I'm actually proud for taking leaps and pushing myself. In the new year, I'm going to be doing the same, except with... more. *fingers crossed*

I feel as though I have changed a lot over the course of 12 months, especially at the end of the year. I also feel like I have really found myself and who I am as an individual. I had someone, and for a while, I was this person who wasn't herself without them. Does that make sense? Don't get me wrong, that's not necessarily a bad thing... but when they left me, I honestly did not know who I was and it was scary. But now... Now it's like I can finally see myself as my own person.

Also; I really grew as a blogger this year and it makes me SO HAPPY. Along with that, I made so many new (blogger) friends! And built on my already made friendships. I now feel as though I am part of a community and that is a feeling I have always dreamt of. <3 So, thank you. Thank you to everyone who has helped me and supported me and made me smile stupidly at my phone. You guys are the cheese to my oh-so-tasty crust.

The year is over and you know what that means...

The blogger yearbook! The amazingly talented Abby has put together another outstanding blogger yearbook WITH AN EPIC PLAYLIST! You should totally check it out and see if you can find me. ;) Click here for pure awesomeness.

Until next time,

How to Get Cozy This Season

INITIATE FREAK OUT SESSION BECAUSE CHRISTMAS IS BASICALLY HERE AND I AM NOT READY

I know this time of year gets super hectic and it gets harder and harder for us to find time to sit down and have a moment of peace. That is why I think it is important to remind ourselves to relax and have a few moments of cozy silence.

I know I tend to talk more about introverts here but if you are an extrovert and all these tips sound like heaven to you, please let me know! I love learning about people and their personality types. Also; I may mention a few things that are Christmas related but this post is directed toward anyone, regardless of holiday celebrations.

Without further ado... Shall we?

How to Get Cozy While The Whole World is Freaking Out

i. wake up early

I woke up the other day while the whole outside was drowning itself in a winter wonderland. It was so beautiful, and the whole house was silent so I made myself a cup of cocoa and had a mini photoshoot with Ravenquill Press's book club pick. Doesn't my hot chocolate look so yummy? And I didn't burn my tongue on it this time! Yay, me!

I wouldn't necessarily say that I had woken up early, but I will say that getting up before everyone else is such a good feeling. You get to have some time to yourself and you can spend it any way you want. I feel as though this really helps get you prepped for the rest of the day. Plus, if you treat yourself to some coffee or cocoa or tea right when you wake up, and have some quality fun time with yourself, you'll start feeling a little more eager to wake up in the morning.

ii. find a comfy resting place next to the Christmas tree and READ

Well, I'm fairly sure this is a given... But reading is the #1 key to getting cozy. Set aside at least one hour of your day to grab your current read and dive into it. I've found that I am a lot calmer and more relaxed after I have had a good reading session. It kind of helps prepare you for whatever else your day has to bring. Plus, reading it next to the tree with its twinkly lights makes me want to cry tears of joy (I can be a bit dramatic, okay?).

ORRRR... Make sure that you read right before bed. Set everything aside (i.e. to-do lists, electronics, worries, etc.) and climb under the warm covers with a good ol' book. Sometimes it's nice to turn down the heat a bit and get yourself warm by swaddling up in a fluffy blanket. Wow, I think I'm putting myself to sleep while writing this. IT JUST SOUNDS SO NICE AND COZY, AM I RIGHT??

iii. get outside

Nothing makes you appreciate the warmth like enduring some cold. So, get outside. Play in the snow (if you have any). Go for a long walk until your cheeks are pink and you can't feel your fingers. Then get back inside and get warmed up. Grab a blanket or take a hot shower. You'll feel 100000000000% more amazing.

Challenge: Every winter I make sure to go outside at least once after midnight. If you live in a snowy climate it's best to do this while it's snowing or right after it has snowed because, let me tell you, it is one of the best feelings in the world. You step outside and the cold stings your skin but it feels amazing, and the whole world is extra bright because the moon's light is reflecting against the snow. You look up at the sky and you get one of those excited feelings like this is it. Tomorrow, everything changes and you are a whole new person, and you've just discovered who you really are. Things just got deep in here, my dude.

iv. snuggle with your pet

Your pet loves you. You love them. NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME TO SNUGGLE WITH YOUR FURY FRIEND. (Rhyming was not intended. I'm just that awesome.)

And if you don't have a pet, go grab that teddy bear. Don't have a teddy bear? I'll lend you my stuffed monkey. Just snuggle for pete's sake!

v. a few more suggestions...

- watch a movie with the fam
- listen to instrumental christmas music (this is the best)
- journal next to the tree
- wear fuzzy socks
- make snowflakes
- count your blessings
- read the fam a bedtime story
- do all of the above preferably next to the tree because christmas trees automatically make everything 1000x cozier

Ahh, don't you feel so much more cozy now? Yes? No? Maybe? Let me know.

Self-Care 101 with Kenzie (8 Helpful Tips on Taking Care of Yourself)

Last week, I took a six-day break from social media. Well, except for snapchat and occasionally pinning on Pinterest... But let's not get into details. My main point is that I took a social media break as a form of self-care. I was dealing with a lot of overwhelming emotions at the time and I just needed to step back and take a breather.

It helped.

Within that week, I focused on doing things that made me feel more like myself. I cleaned my room, I made goals, I #didallthethings. I did things that made me feel less stressed and put me in a more calming attitude. I basically stepped back so I could start out fresh and new again. So, today I want to share a few tips that might help you when you're having a mentally tough day/week.

Self-Care 101 with Kenzie

Hello, class! I am your instructor, and today we will be discussing the importance of self-care with some tips on how to maintain it. Now, no aggressive staring during the lecture. It makes me uncomfortable... so if you could just look the other way, that would be great. o-o Anywho! Onto the tips...

Tip #1: Lighting is everything

I know this is one of my main tips for photography, but it is also one of the tips I live by for mental health. For me, my mood is affected by my surroundings. I feel as though that might apply to you as well... So, if you're ever feeling gloomy, your room might be feeling gloomy too. Spruce it up with the Christmas/fairy lights. It will 100% guarantee make everything feel a lot better.

Tip #2: Calm your music

Hey, if you're into that heavy metal screamo then rock on, my friend. But sometimes, your favorite music might not be the best music to listen to when you're feeling stressed out or overwhelmed. I think instrumental music is the way to go for this- especially when you're working on something that you've been stressing over and you need to get it done. One night I was feeling a bit anxious and I put on some ukulele music (here's the YouTube video) and it definitely calmed me down.

OR... You could try listening to your favorite songs but with only instruments. Sometimes that helps keep me focused so I don't get distracted by listening to the lyrics (hehe).

OR... I was feeling kind of down one night and I put on some music from the 20s-50s and it just made everything feel so much better. I highly recommend you doing that whilst working around the house or read or whatnot.

Tip #3: Clean

A clean room is a happy room! Annnnd... I probably sound like your parent but it's true!! So, you. Yes, you. Go clean your room. And rearrange it while you're at it- rearranging your things helps keep everything fresh. It'll be like you got a whole new room without spending any money!

Tip #4: Take a shower then light some candles

I love taking showers. Whenever I'm feeling blah, the first thing I do is shower. It's so refreshing and makes me feel like a whole new person afterwards and ahhh yes, go shower. You will love it. Okay now that you are done, light some candles. They don't have to be romantic smelling candles, just candles. The small flicker and light will give you such a calming feeling, you will most likely fall asleep without any anxious tummy troubles. Doesn't that sound so nice?

Tip #5: Use essential oils

As of last year, my family has gotten into using essential oils as home remedies. We've been using them for anxiety, boo-boos, cleaning, and sometimes cooking. I highly recommend defusing essential oils when you need something to either calm you down or perk you up. WANNA KNOW THE BEST PART ABOUT ESSENTIAL OILS? If it doesn't help say (for example) with a headache, then who cares? You're giving your body something good for it, so even if an essential oil doesn't take your headache away, at least you're not damaging your body.

Tip #6: FEED and WATER yourself

This is very important, my peeps. And it is something we, as humans, often forget to do. Hey, you know it's true so stop looking at me like that. SOMETIMES I FORGET TO DRINK/EAT. IT IS SOMETHING WE ALL DO SO DON'T JUDGE ME.

You are like a flower, my child. So take care of yourself like one. AND DRINK ALL THE WATER. Why? Because if you don't you feel like a soggy bowl of cereal. And who likes feeling like a soggy bowl of cereal? No one. Your mood and skin will feel so much better if you keep drinking water. CLEAN OUT THOSE TOXINS, YO.

Tip #7: Color!

Everybody loves coloring. It is a huge anxiety reliever and will definitely put you in the best, relaxed mood. Honestly, I need to color more. Who wants to join me? Also- I just started doing some word searches and I love it. They're kind of addicting??

Tip #8: Step away from the world

Take a social media break. Set aside what you do every day and go put that time and energy in learning something new. It's fun to try stuff that is out of your comfort zone. Yeah, sometimes it can be agitating when you try to learn something then you realize it's just not your thing. THAT IS OKAY THOUGH! Because at least you can say that you tried. :)

Now, take all of those tips and have a date with yourself! Even if you don't think you need it, you do.

Thanks for reading! Until next time...
